Beautiful showy flowers having prominent overlapping bracts as with protea. The brilliant cone shaped flowers protrude from 4' stalks. The young buds, which have a spicy flavor, are edible. Foliage is dark green, often maroon beneath. A native of Java, Indonesia, it was brought to Suriname by immigrants and is now a common garden plant in this country. Must be watered well. Excellent for the greenhouse. Can be used in tropical cut flower arrangements. Botanical synonyms include Nicolaia elatior, Phaeomeria magnifica, Nicolaia speciosa, Phaeomeria speciosa, Alpinia elatior, Alpinia magnifica. The showy pink flowers are used in decorative arrangements while the flower buds are an important ingredient in the Nonya dish laksa. In North Sumatra, the flower buds are used for a dish called arsik ikan mas (Andaliman/Szechuan pepper Spiced Carp) It is known in Indonesian as bunga kecombrang or honje, Malay as bunga kantan and Thai as kaalaa. In Karo, it is known as asam cekala (asam meaning 'sour'), and the flower buds, but more importantly the ripe seed pods, which are packed with small black seeds, are an essential ingredient of the Karo version of sayur asam, and are particularly suited to cooking fresh fish. Leaves of E. elatior have the highest antioxidant, antibacterial and tyrosinase inhibition activities among five Etlingera species studied. Antioxidant properties (AOP) of leaves were significantly stronger than flowers and rhizomes.Pink Torch Ginger 'Pink Torch' Ginger is a similar plant to the traditional Red Torch. If you want a tropical appeal this is a must have ginger. Mass planted in a bed with cordylines and heliconia, 'Pink Torch' looks fantastic as a landscaping plant. Pink Torch' has tall, gracefully arching 10-12 foot leaves and lovely porcelain pink inflorescence from 3-4 feet tall. The pink "petals" are actually bracts, which later reveal small yellow true flowers inside. The pink color is shading to white or almost transparent towards the tip creating an impressive porcelain-like effect. This is the longest lasting cut-flower of all Etlingeras. A beautiful ginger plant with attractive foliage producing tulip-shaped plastic pink flowers on basal stems. The undersides of the leaves are a darker green that is retained even when the leaves are mature. The unusual inflorescences are a showy plastic pink color dotted with neon yellow. Pink Torch' requires a sheltered position and prefers rich, moist soil and regular fertilizing. Fantastic light green leaves with darker undersides. Basal tulip-like flowers and occasional terminal flowers (rare). Great landscaping plant. Attractive in the garden and as an exotic cut flower. Blooms throughout the year. Hardiness zones 9-11, (5ºC/40ºF, -5ºC/25ºF) in Winter. Not frost or cold tolerant. Very easy to grow. Best grown in full sun and needs plenty of warmth and well drained conditions. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings. Water freely and feed monthly in growing season. It should be planted in a rich soil high in organic matter. Excellent for the greenhouse but needs high humidity and artificial light.
